Today our PhD student Sandra Giraldo defended her PhD thesis titled “Electroactive self-assembled monolayers: p-donor/p-acceptor interactions to induce transport along of the surface” in an online session.

Abstract: Motor proteins with internal mechanical movement and cargo transport have been used as inspiration for the creation of new stimuli-responsive systems for molecular transport. Following up this motivation, new electroactive monolayers formed with p-acceptor bipyridinium salts has been explored. These systems are able to interact supramolecularly with p-donor cargoes which can be fluorescent molecules or micro- and nanoparticles. The p-donor/p-acceptor interaction is broken once the electroactive molecule is reduced by applying a redox stimulus, inducing the cargo decomplexation. The response of these monolayers to redox stimuli and the possibility of controlling the decomplexation of the cargo open the door to their use as electrochemical molecular switches for the transport of cargoes along of the electroactive surfaces.
