Congratulations Dr. Sandra Giraldo, another Doctor in the group and a new ICMAB Graduate

Today our PhD student Sandra Giraldo defended her PhD thesis titled “Electroactive self-assembled monolayers: p-donor/p-acceptor interactions to induce transport along of the surface” in an online session.

Well done! =)

Abstract: Motor proteins with internal mechanical movement and cargo transport have been used as inspiration for the creation of new stimuli-responsive systems for molecular transport. Following up this motivation, new electroactive monolayers formed with p-acceptor bipyridinium salts has been explored. These systems are able to interact supramolecularly with p-donor cargoes which can be fluorescent molecules or micro- and nanoparticles. The p-donor/p-acceptor interaction is broken once the electroactive molecule is reduced by applying a redox stimulus, inducing the cargo decomplexation. The response of these monolayers to redox stimuli and the possibility of controlling the decomplexation of the cargo open the door to their use as electrochemical molecular switches for the transport of cargoes along of the electroactive surfaces.

Our PhD student Sandra Giraldo will defend her Thesis! =)

The PhD researcher Sandra Giraldo from the Supramolecular systems in Nanomedicine Group (UB) and FunNanoSurf Group (ICMAB-CSIC), will defend her PhD thesis on Friday, 26 February 2021, at 11 am in an online session.

The PhD Thesis Defense will be held by videoconference from the ICMAB meeting room.

International Women and Girls in Science Day. What would have happened if Einstein had been born a woman?

On the occasion of International Women and Girls in Science Day, researchers are launching the #NoMoreMatildas campaign to make their work visible.
“Can you imagine what would have happened if Einstein had been born a woman? We probably wouldn’t know who she was. ”

Put an eye on this interesting video 😉

Dr. Arántzazu González talk about “The Matilda effect” in Catalunya Radio Programme “Les dones i els dies”

What is Matilda effect? The Matilda Effect is known as the constant invisibilization of women in the science field. They don’t appear in the science or history boks, and their research results are many times diluted among the results of their male colleagues, maybe because these latter reclaim its authorship or because it is not believed that what their female colleagues are researching is important enough.

FunNanoSurf is a multidisciplinary group at the ICMAB (Institute of Material Science of Barcelona, Bellaterra, Spain) interested in the integration of molecules as active elements in nano-/micro-devices with the goal of developing functional molecular-based platforms for electronic and/or sensing applications.

Job Description

We are looking to recruit a postdoctoral fellow to create hybrid graphene-based three-terminal nanodevices. The postdoctoral fellow will oversee the design, fabrication and characterization of graphene-based electrodes separated by a nano-gap (<2 nm) using controlled electroburning, as well as the analysis and treatment of the experimental data. Electronic transport measurements of three-terminal nanodevices will be performed in a probe station under various environmental conditions to assess their efficiency and robustness as electronic sensors.

New times, New ways! NanoBio&amp;amp;amp;Med2020 Virtual Conference.

Last Friday (10/07/2020), our PhD student Sandra Giraldo Clemente attended on a virtual NanoBio&Med2020 Conference. Her speech was entitled Neurotransmitter’s encapsulation on Bipyridinium-functionalized polysilicon microparticles by supramolecular interactions.

At the NanoBio&Med2020, it have been presented the most recent international developments in the field of Nanobiotechnology and Nanomedicine in order to provide a platform for multidisciplinary communication, new cooperations and projects to participants from both science and industry.

The ICMAB donates 33.200 gloves for medical uses. Solidarity is the only way!

The ICMAB is since last Monday 16 March 2020, an Institute with Restricted Access. Most of the laboraories are empty, the Scientific and Technical Services are closed, only the basic services are working and most of the people is working and staying at home. For this reason, when we heard that Personal Protection Equipment was needed in the hospitals and health centers, we had no doubt that we could donate some of the material that we had.

Sants3Radio covers the #11F2020 in &amp;amp;quot;Escola Can Maiol&amp;amp;quot; with Arántzazu González

The CSIC Catalunya organized a morning in which women scientists from different CSIC centers visited the school “Escola Can Maiol” in Sants, Barcelona, to talk and experiment with science. From the ICMAB, Arántzazu González, chemist, visited the group of 3r Primària (8-9 years old) and did some experiments to discover the acid/basic properties of some natural substances that we have at home by the change of color. Sants3Radio was there to talk with them!
